Big Sister Class

Last week, we took Jillian to attend what we called "The Big Sister Class". This is a one hour class put on by the hospital, to help siblings prepare for the birth of the new baby. This particular session was for kids age 2-3, so you can imagine the brave soul of a nurse required to teach it. Jillian was very excited to go to this special class, and was proud to bring along the required items: a newborn picture of herself and a baby doll. As you might imagine, she wasted no time getting acquainted with the teacher or the other kids. She spoke up during the class when questions were asked (What do babies eat? Jillian shouted "Bottles!" I admit I was relieved at this answer. Usually she says "Milk from Mommy's boobies" while laughing), and eagerly went on the field trip to check out a real newborn baby in the nursery. She also got to see a sample hospital room to give her an idea of where I will be, and where she will come meet her sister. But perhaps her favorite activity of the evening was learning to diaper a baby. She quickly threw her own baby aside to try this out on one of the more realistic hospital dolls.

First, it's time to learn to hold the baby properly, but not before giving her a good poke in the eye.

She's pretty close, but not sure what to do with her left hand.

Now the diapering fun begins! She takes a quick moment to watch the teacher after easily removing the diaper herself.

Success! With a little help from mom and dad, this baby sister is ready to roll.

I should also mention that the teacher had a hard time keeping Jillian out of her diaper stock. She apparently didn't quite understand the level of persistence Jillian can display when she really wants something. I am pretty sure Jillian "stole" at least four additional diapers before the teacher managed to get them out of her reach. Jillian left this class with a big grin on her face, a gift bag full of stickers, color books about being a big sister and a certificate of completion. Is she ready? Time will tell....
